Psoriasis Vulgaris: what do we need to know about this disease?

Psoriasis Vulgaris is a chronic skin disease characterized by large red plaques covered with silvery-white scales, mainly on the elbows, knees, waist, and scalp. About 30% of the patients also have psoriatic arthritis. In this case, pain, swelling, and/or redness of the joints may occur.
The rashes are of different sizes. In the absence of treatment and the presence of predisposing factors, they can merge and cover the whole body. They may also cover the limbs. The disease occurs in people of all ages.
Possible causes of the disease include genetic predisposition, infection, medication, stress, and others. Under the influence of these factors, it can lead to inflammation, accumulation of cytokines in the skin, change in cell division rate in the epidermis, and finally: the appearance of scales on the surface of the skin.
Psoriasis treatment is carried out with local means – ointments for external use and systemic means – drugs for internal use (methotrexate, cyclosporine). Biological therapies are successfully being used more and more – an innovation in psoriasis treatment with an excellent result even in severe forms that are difficult to treat. Achieving control over the disease and handling it to the extent that it does not interfere with the patient’s social life is completely real.
